One of the questions I get the most from families booking beach photos in Avalon, Sea Isle City, and Ocean City, New Jersey is what to do if their kids still nap. And honestly? I get it. Sunset is beautiful, but it can also fall right in that tricky dinner/bedtime window.

My biggest advice is don’t skip the nap. If you can, try pushing it a little later that day even 30 minutes to an hour can help. I’d always rather have a kid show up a little off schedule than completely overtired.

I also always tell parents to keep the day as low-key as possible. A full beach day, boardwalk, and then family photos at sunset is a lot for little kids. If you can, have a fun morning/ afternoon, a good nap, and eat before you head to your session.

And definitely bring a simple snack, water, and whatever comfort item helps if your little one needs a minute to warm up.

The biggest thing to remember is that beach sessions with young kids do not need to look perfect to be beautiful. Some of the sweetest moments happen in between — the snuggles, the running, the sandy little hands, and the way your kids just naturally are with you.

If you’re planning family photos in Avalon, Sea Isle City, or Ocean City, NJ, and wondering if a sunset session will work for your crew, I’m always happy to help talk through timing.
